Often, when Happy Trails is asked why a humane officer was not able to remove a suffering animal from a horrible situation of abuse or neglect, our bottom-of-the-barrel Ohio laws are to blame.
The next question people ask me, is what can they do about it? "Change the laws," is always my answer. "How do we do that?" they ask. Well, here's exactly how you do that! This lobby day, sponsored by HSUS (Humane Society Of The United Sates) is a crucial step in the right direction.
Here is a link to details about this important day.
If anyone is interested in going, this lobby day is open to the public and all are invited.
I would encourage everyone who has the time to attend. People always complain about our lax animal-cruelty laws, but not too many people want to take or make the time to do anything to change the laws. HERE'S OUR CHANCE to have our voices heard with our elected officials!
Due to Happy Trails involvement and first-hand experience in cockfighting cases, I was asked to give proponent testimony last February regarding H.B. 415 to make animal fighting a felony in Ohio. Thanks to Representative John Domenick and Representative Louis Blessing who championed H.B. 415, dog fighting is now a third degree felony and cockfighting is a fourth degree felony. One law at a time, we can make a difference.
You can sign up to attend Humane Lobby Day through the link above.
And please pass this along to others who may be interested in helping improve the animal laws here in Ohio!
